Spring Assessment

Authors Note: This Spring DWA writing piece was inspired by the book "Twisted" by Laurie Halse Anderson. Sometimes when you feel like a nobody, you feel like you have to change, but this could mean bad or good. Tyler is going to have the feeling of his dream that he has been wanting for a long time, but this always comes with consequences. This story definitely has a long journey ahead of it.

One Choice Can Make a Long Journey

Imagine yourself feeling like a piece of garbage lying on the floor. People step on you, throw you, and kick you around. A person picks you up and you think you have that chance of a life time; that you’re going to be recycled and have a fresh new start, but in reality it’s just a dream. Think about a person in this position and feeling all of those things, this is exactly like someone’s life. This life belongs to the name of Tyler Miller. In the book “Twisted” by the author Laurie Halse Anderson, feeling ashamed of yourself for no reason and then decide to make it worse, you know you have to do something, something so great that everyone in school will know you. When you get into trouble and you know that you are, it makes life really tough.

When something gets to the point where you have to make yourself stand out, something is wrong. The author, Laurie Halse Anderson, was trying to make a point of this situation. Laurie’s style and purpose of writing is very unique. A good book is where you are not able to stop reading, and this is what the author gave me. She very intensively made the characters almost like a real human being, and created action. I was there at every part, and I can clearly remember every action. Sometimes there are parts where I can certainly relate; in other parts they’re not.

When I can relate to something in a book, I can definitely understand how the character feels. In the book, Tyler Miller, the main character, has a harsh father. This father is particularly rude and has no feelings for others. I can relate to this because I know what it feels like not to be appreciated and cared for, but not from my father, from friends. It is hard at times, but I know you can manage. Tyler is sensitive and sweet and has a crush on a girl named Bethany Millbury. While he is around her, he is wishes at every moment that they’d become girlfriend and boyfriend. You can have those moments where you think you have that chance you have been dreaming of for years, but that definitely isn’t going to happen when her sibling is his worst enemy.

Enemies aren’t a good thing to keep around. They can ruin your friendship with others, and can create other enemies against you. Pretty soon, you will end up being alone and wanting to stand out somehow. You can create negative or positive things but one action you do or say, will never be able to change. Just like in the book “Twisted,” Tyler makes himself stand out, by doing graffiti on the school grounds. He made this decision and he won’t be able to change it. When making wrong decisions, you should always know that there are going to be consequences. In this situation, Tyler has to face counseling and meeting with cops. But furthermore you know that they are going to be positives, which again is going to attract negatives. Bethany has a brother named Chip, and he hates Tyler. Fighting is a fantastic way to describe physical attitude towards each other.  It is nonstop, punching, kicking, verbal hate, and harassment, are all the ways it went, but at the end it was all good and conflict is resolved.

Sometimes life can be tough at times because you’ve caused trouble. Thus instead of causing it, avoid it. Many times you may have to back yourself up by having the last word, so you don’t look like a fool. In many cases though when you leave the situation be, you will look like the stronger one, and the argument will settle down. Life is full of choices and when you know something you did is wrong, your life suddenly is very difficult. Don’t get down on yourself for one thing, it was a mistake. Let the problem go, and mentally you are the stronger person.
